The
article mainly talks about some controversial ethical issues of biomedical
engineering. One issue mentioned is whether or not a person with prosthetic
body parts can be considered fully human. If I were to answer that question, I
would definitely say yes. Also, having a non-human body part does not harm the
identity of the individual, nor should there be a limit to how many prosthetic
items a person can have on his/her body.
Twenty
years ago my favorite comedian starred in a sci-comedy. In this movie he had
been exploded into pieces, but then he was saved by a crazy scientist who put a
microchip into his head, which helped to reform his body. After that this guy
gained a kind of superpower and made his revenge. I love this movie so much
that I have watched it for more than ten times, and there was never ever a
moment when I did not regard him as a fully human. Why? Because it is the mind,
consciousness in another word, that makes a human human. If a person is able to
make his/her own decision with his/her own mind, just like you do, and the only
difference between you and them is they have prosthetic body parts to get rid
of crutches or wheelchairs, what is
the reason that he/she is not considered fully human? No, there is no reason
for such a cruel prejudice. Any human with a fully mind is a fully human.
The fully mind is important to people exactly. But if we can use this technology well, I'm not sure whether or not it can improve the quality of human's life better, it can make that disabilities more confidence of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think you make a good point here about the psychology of those who are disabled.

DeleteThanks for the comment. The prosthetic body parts can definitely improve the life quality of the disabled.
I am agree with you that mind is something essential to make a person to be a fully human. No matter what kind of fake part for his body nor the tools which is used to help him or her finish the action, as long as its his or her idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment. Yes, mind makes a human human.
