Summary:
With
the development of scientific and technological progress, there are so many new
sciences appeared. One is called biomedical engineering which combines
expertise in engineering with expertise in medicine and human biology, and this
new science aim to contribute to good patient care and health.
There
are so many ethical issues about whether human should focus on building their
superior body by using biomedical engineering. Do people should be responsible
for all of their actions if they have their prosthetics in their brain and
should biomedical engineers try to develop brains that are superior to the
normal human brain?
It
is really amazing that you can do the brain transplant using this biomedical
engineering. Of the last century, there is an American doctor, named Robert J.
White, who was succeed in transplant a dog’s brain into another dog’s body, although
this brain transplanted dog only lives 8 days after the surgery. This
successful experiment had an enormous implication at that time because this
technology give people hope, who are completely paralyzed, to make them live a
life like normal people. By transplant the completely paralyzed people’s brain
into another healthy human body, they can heal their disability of their body,
but only thing to consider, “you are going to have a new body and a new brain,
so who you are?’ which is also put forward by Doctor White. This technology has not been used in human due to the social ethics.
Personally
speaking, I am really can’t accept this technology to develop a superior brain
by using biomedical engineering, for the reason is that I think it’s the same
situation with the brain transplant; scientists have proved that when people do
the heart transplant, they may have a totally different actions after the
surgery, let alone to develop the superior brains. Maybe I can be a smart person after I get a superior brain, but I never want to be the
person who is not myself.
Very interesting-- I didn't realize that there were also psychological issues that appeared after heart transplants. I think when behavior might be altered, more steps to protect the individual and the people around them are needed.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that heart transplants could somehow change the patients in more than one aspect, which is kind of frightening. This is an issue worthy considering by whoever wants to get involved with a brain transplant surgery.
