Journal 1

I do have a cell phone, and it is hard to imagine what my life would be if there were no wifi, not to say without a smartphone. When I am bored, my first choice to improve the situation is to reach for my phone. On my smart phone I can read novels and manga, play games and listen to music. However, I usually start with refreshing online apps, such as Renren(Chinese version of Facebook) and Weibo(Chinese version of Twitter). Sometimes I do not get anything new after I refresh them, which makes feel even more bored, but I just cannot help doing this. Anyway I think it would be much better for me to spend less time on the smartphone and do things that make sense.

  1. I agree, Sheng. Once a habit is formed, it is very difficult to end it. The trick might be to find an alternative source to run to instead of the phone. You said that you'd like to stop spending such an exorbitant time on your electronic devices and do "things that make sense." What do these "things" entail for you?

If I were to answer that question, I would not have a ready answer, and it most likely would take you some time to truly think of what those "things" are. I've heard that, when making a change, it's best to have a very specific alternative, or else it simply won't happen.

Since the article talked about boredom as being a catalyst for creativity, perhaps those "things that make sense" still would not be our solution to being able to simply sit with our own selves.

    1. Maybe we have already spent too much time on smart phones. As the old saying goes, give me a smart phone and let me have access to WIFI, I can say in the wash room all day long;)

Thanks for the comment. I do agree that doing things that makes sense is not the solution. The key point is to have a creative mind to let ourselves not feel bored, even when we just sit there doing nothing.

  2. It's true for us to change our mind when we realize the negative effort that smartphone bring to us, but it's really hard for us to change the habit useless there is another thing which is more attractive than the phone. But once the new thing appeared, we may also get attracted to it. So my opinion is that we don't need to care about this bad effect, just do it as usual :)

    1. Thanks for the comment. GOOD POINT ! The situation you described could be true,I mean, considering how fast the technology is developing, it would not surprise me if anything more attractive than smartphones comes out. However, it should not be the reason why I keep wasting time on my phone.Current situation is still necessarily to be improved.

  3. It's really important for us if we could control the times that we use smartphone. We have spent too much time on the smartphone. On the other side, the smartphone help us solve many problems. So it's a big confusion for us.

    1. Thanks for the comment. Reducing time we spend on smartphones does not mean we do not use them any more. If we spend more time on getting help than having fun, what we spend on smartphones really counts then.

    2. That's a good point, Sheng. Perhaps it's all about what we use the smart phone for, and not necessarily how much time we use it.
