According to Wechsler’s “Getting
Serious about Eradication Binge Drinking,” I agree with the author on that Binge
Drinking should be considered as a serious problem in college campus. Binge
drinking should not happen in campus as the author mentioned “college are civic
communities” (Wechsler 2). Unlike other individual activities, binge drinking
can lead to disorder behaviors which may cause harm to other students. College
is a crowded place, which means a lot of people in a limited space. It is a
commonsense that any accident in a limited space with large population could
have a great impact on students’ security. So, it is really necessary to avoid
binge drinking in college campus.
Wechsler gives us a good suggestion
that “[Drunk students] should have to clean up vomit in the bathrooms made
unusable on weekend, help care for drunken students at the college health
center, repair damage from vandalism, and pick up litter” (21). This punishment
can not only let the students remember the lesson but also benefit other
students as compensation. However, in my opinion it’s still not enough because
not all the consequences caused by binge drinking can be compensated. If someone
hurt in the accident made by drunk students, it will be promoted to be a law
issue. It’s a kind of harm to the whole society, so we need to find more
methods. Establishing a law is a good idea because law is more powerful than
any other rules. It’s better to classify the drunk behavior into different
levels. If the students act beyond the warning limit, the person should bear
the lawful punishment which matches the person’s behavior.
It's a good way to make law on the issue binge drinking. However, people are determined to drink, they still find their way out to get drunk.
