Henry Wechsler, the author of “Getting Serious
about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” discussed about ways to help decreasing
colleges students drinking related issues. We could take a wide guess that
binge drinking is overwhelming over college students just via the statistics
from his article that there were 43 per cent of 14,500 students reported they
binged at least once for continuing two weeks. (Wechsler 20) Binge drinking is not only damaging health,
but somehow it takes lives away as well. It is believed that sharing through
peer would be more persuasive than through authorities because most people
think that when adults speak about serious business it sounds like nagging. It
is worth to look at one of the ways that Wechsler mentioned that peer has
stronger influence on drinking; and it would be better to address the binge
drinking through a forum between college students and freshmen rather than
through a fraternity or tailgate parties. Wechsler says, “High-school students
are more likely to believe the messages of college students than those of
teachers and other adults.”(Wechsler 23)
The author suggests that there is another way
to reduce instead of stop binge drinking through educate college students
lesson of drinking. Everything needs to be learned including drinking. There
are many issues need to be properly presented to students; yet, most
educational institutions dare not to touch the areas like drinking. We cannot
expect students to figure out things on their owns without providing them
strategies to deal with. Therefore, it is necessary to educate students with
knowledge of drinking. The content should be covered with the history of
alcohol, alcohol appreciation, alcohol and economy, alcohol and health, last
but not the least, responsibility and obligation on drinking. Students are well
equipped with knowledge of drinking, they will probably think twice before they
dive into binge drinking.
I agree with you on teaching students the common sense of alcohol, for we should have the ability to identify what is good or bad and what is wrong or right.
