Binge
drinking is becoming a serious problem for nowadays’ college students. According
to a Harvard study, the author mentions, “Among students who drink, 52 per cent
said a major motivation was ‘to get drunk,’ compared 39 per cent in the first
study” (Wechsler 20). The survey from Harvard shows that instead of getting released,
the intemperance problem is becoming more and more serious. In Wechsler’s
article, he mentions the reasons of for binge drinking’s hard to decrease: “For
one thing, binge drinking has been so deeply entrenched for so long at colleges
that it can’t be expected to disappear overnight. However, the more important
reason that change eludes us is that some colleges have relied too much on one
approach to solve the problem—trying to get the binge drinkers themselves to
stop, rather than focusing equal attention on factors that make it easy for
students to drink too much.”
In
order to solve the problems caused by binge drinking, several actions should be
taken. Firstly, Wechsler said that doing research into actual behavior and then
informing students about how many students actually binge would help binge drinkers
realize the truth that there are no that students who are binge drinkers. The
second approach, which I think is most efficient from Wechsler’s article that
students who become drunk and disorderly should be made to take responsibility
for the messes they made. Such solution can help binge drinkers notice how
disturbing they are and will make up for the trouble they made at a certain
extent.
As
far as I am concerned, those binge drinkers who have made big issues to the
public should be punished by the university. It is reasonable to expel such
annoying students. All in all, binge drinking is a serious problem which should
be stopped.
Binge drinker may cause many problems for our society. They are very dangerous guys for us.
